Stag Bakeries
Our bakery is based on Cannery Road just outside the centre of Stornoway.
Based on the scenic Isle of Lewis, Stag Bakeries is a family-run bakery with a heritage dating back to 1885. Traditional recipes and time-honoured methods are still at the heart of each product their team of skilled craft bakers make. Stag specialises in producing premium bakery snack products such as savoury biscuits, cheese straws, traditional Scottish shortbread, and speciality fruit cakes. Each product is made using the finest ingredients and nothing is rushed. The result is an award-winning product range trusted on quality and provenance.

What do you produce?
We produce a range of sweet and savoury bakery products. Biscuits for cheese are our specialty and we make award-winning water biscuits and oatcakes in a number of flavours. We also produce a range of puff-pastry cheese straws made with Scottish cheeses from the highlands, and shortbread and oaties in collaboration with the Hebridean Baker.
Where do you source your ingredients / materials from?
Provenance is of key importance to us. We use three lovely cheeses from the north of Scotland for our cheese straw range, and we are always keen to find great ingredients with a story that we can include in our products.
Why do your customers love your products?
We are still family owned with three generations of the Macdonald family currently working in the business. Heritage, quality and provenance are our biggest selling points and customers love finding out more about where we are based on the Isle of Lewis.
What are your best selling products?
In Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, our best selling product remains our traditional Plain Loaf. Further afield on the mainland, our Water Biscuits and Cheese Straws prove very popular with our customers.
Where can we buy your products?
We have an online shop on our website where a wide selection of our range can be found. We also work with a number of fine food wholesalers in England and Scotland.
Are you open for visitors? If yes, what are your opening hours?
Our bakery reception is open from 8am-5pm, Mondays to Fridays.
Have you received any awards / lovely recommendations from experts (don't be shy!)?
Our Plain Bread was named Best Bread in Scotland in the 2019 Scottish Bakers awards. We have been fortunate enough to receive over 20 Great Taste Awards for our products since 2000.
Do you sell wholesale? If so how do we get in touch with you to discuss further?
We do sell wholesale - for any enquiries, please reach out to us at sales@stagbakeries.co.uk.
Who's the best local producer near you (except you of course!)?
We're blessed in Stornoway to have three fantastic butcher shops in and around the town centre - Charles Macleod, MacLeod & MacLeod Butchers, and W J Macdonald Ltd.
For anyone visiting your area what's your "must see" local place?
The Calanais Standing Stones are a must see attraction around 12 miles outside of Stornoway.
