Ten Acres Vineyard
Ten Acres, Winkleigh, Devon EX19 8EY
Inspired by their five-year sojourn in southern Hungary, Toby and Esther McKinnel transformed a south-facing slope of Winkleigh's former wartime airfield into Ten Acres Vineyard in 2007. Armed with winemaking wisdom passed down from Hungarian elders, they carefully selected grape varieties robust enough to thrive in Dartmoor's challenging climate. Today, the vineyard boasts over 2,500 vines, with the first plantings dating back to 2008. Every aspect of wine production takes place in their intimate on-site cellar, from pressing to bottling, embodying true artisanal winemaking. Their Devon Wine Shack, operating from May through September, serves as both shop and visitor centre, offering their wines alongside carefully curated local produce, crafts, and their own apple juice. The McKinnels share their passion through regular vineyard tours, where visitors can experience the full journey from vine to glass. Saturday afternoon tours have become a highlight for many, offering intimate glimpses into English wine production, complete with guided tastings of their still and sparkling wines.
