Colebrooke Clay

Studio 22 (Pop up 19 - 21 July, and 13 to 15 December 2024) New Bond Street Bath BA1 1BA

We are James and Ingrid, and we are hobby potters! We make mostly ceramic mugs, bowls and plates. Each item is unique as it is either hand built or thrown on the potter’s wheel right here in our garden studio in Bath, UK. Both our styles are very different, so if you look at our website, you will see that James glazes mostly in blues and greens, and uses a speckled clay, whereas Ingrid works with smooth white clay, and uses colour slips to create unique, hand carved sgraffito designs in her work.

What do you produce?

We love making mugs and bowls on the potter’s wheel, but we also make cheese plates and hand decorated plates that are designed with leaves hand carved freehand into slip, which is coloured clay. Each piece is unique, as each piece is hand crafted by us, here in our garden studio in Bath, UK.

Where do you source your ingredients / materials from?

We buy our clay from a local supplier, Bath Potters, which is about half an hour from Bath itself. Most of our glazes and tools are bought from them too, and we rely on them for help and advice regarding our kiln, wheels and other matters regarding ceramics. Hot Clays is also a supplier we use on occasion.

Why do your customers love your products?

Our pieces are unique! There is nothing like them in the whole wide world. Each piece is handmade, and crafted with care and precision, and we love that our customers come back to buy items for themselves and as gifts for friends and family.

What are your best selling products?

Our mugs are very popular, and become treasured vessels to use daily for coffee or tea, or even soup or breakfast, or pudding!

Where can we buy your products?

We have pop-up shops a few times a year at Studio 22, New Bond Street, in Bath. We are also happy to sell from our studio, and customers who contact us are invited to pop over to see what we have in stock. Two outlets in Bath carry mugs: Museum of East Asian Art in Bennett Street, and The Holburne Museum. Hidden Store in Pierrepont Place has a small range of pieces we make, including spoon rests.

Are you open for visitors? If yes, what are your opening hours?

We are happy to invite customers to our studio, if asked. As we are hobby potters, we have a small range, and limited stock, but welcome an interest in our work.

Have you received any awards / lovely recommendations from experts (don't be shy!)?

Yes! Feedback from our customers is very positive. Return customers always sigh with relief when they find us at our pop ups, as it’s rare to find handcrafted, unique ceramics these days, and ones that are well made and beautiful.

Who's the best local producer near you (except you of course!)?

Sally Harker (@blockhousebath) makes really lovely Bath-inspired prints and useful items. Sally Paget (@sallypagetcakes) bakes wonderful cakes and other goodies, and she also creates fabric designs and makes useful items with them. Chai Walla (@chaiwallabath) is an Indian street food outlet that hand makes the most wonderful and tasty take-away snacks ever.

For anyone visiting your area what's your "must see" local place?

Bath is a wonderful small city to visit, and is easily accessible by train too. There is so much to see and do, that it’s too difficult to list all of it! We love the coffee and toasted sandwiches at “Vero’s” in Milsom Place, but we have a long list of places to visit, and foods to try, which we give to our friends when they visit!
