Proper Good Dairy
Hatton Manor Farm, Church Stretton SY6 6QP
In the rolling landscape of the South Shropshire Hills, a farming family is revolutionising local dairy production through a blend of tradition and innovation. The Dale family, custodians of Hatton Farm in the picturesque Ape Dale, are continuing a century-old legacy of dairy farming while embracing modern sustainable practices. Situated just outside Church Stretton in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, their 500-acre farm is home to a distinctive herd of Friesian-Jersey cross cattle. These cows graze the lush pastures for nearly ten months of the year, contributing to the milk's renowned creamy flavour profile and organic status. Under their Proper Good Dairy brand, the family produces unhomogenised milk that's pasteurised within minutes of collection and available to customers within the hour. Their innovative vending machine system located at Hatton Farm, is open from 5am to 9pm daily, allowing customers to purchase milk in reusable glass bottles, eliminating single-use plastic waste. The dairy has expanded significantly, now supplying over 50 stockists across Shropshire, Staffordshire and Herefordshire. Beyond commercial success, they maintain strong community ties, including supporting local school fundraising events. This farm proves brilliantly that traditional farming values can align with contemporary environmental concerns, offering a sustainable model for modern dairy production.
