Village Maid Cheese
The Cottage, Basingstoke Road, Riseley, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 1QD
Village Maid Cheese, established by Anne Wigmore in 1986, is an award-winning artisan cheesemaker located in Riseley, Berkshire. Inspired by the pecorinos of Sardinia, Anne first created Spenwood, a hard-pressed cheese made from unpasteurised ewe’s milk with vegetarian rennet. Matured for 7-8 months, Spenwood develops a thin, natural rind and a well-developed, nutty flavour with sweet and savoury notes. Often compared to Pecorino, Manchego, and Parmigiano Reggiano, it becomes more piquant and slightly crumbly with age, making it an excellent substitute for Parmesan in pasta dishes. Village Maid Cheese sources the highest quality milk from local farms committed to sustainability and animal welfare, reflecting their dedication to traditional cheesemaking methods and environmental responsibility. In addition to Spenwood, their cheese selection includes Wigmore, Waterloo, Maida Vale, and Heckfield.
